Cultural
LAC fosters Lithuanian culture and language by sponsoring
folk dance festivals, song festivals, awards for artists, journalists,
and media practitioners and by publishing books. It nurtures
U.S.-grown Lithuanian talents and sponsors programs of artists and
writers from Lithuania.
Educational
Heritage and Language Schools provide classes for all
ages. These schools are instrumental in keeping the Lithuanian
heritage vibrant in the United States. LAC publishes in Lithuanian
Eglutë, a children’s magazine and Pensininkas for older Lithuanians,
and in English Bridges, a magazine for general audiences, and
Lituanus, a journal of the arts and sciences.
Human Services
The Human Services Council provides information and
legal and social services aid. The council publishes Pensininkas, a
magazine for senior citizens as well as articles in the Lithuanian
press. The council provides aid to the people of Lithuania by
sponsoring Lithuanian Children’s Hope, Lithuanian Orphan Care, and the
Lithuanian Freedom Fighters Fund.
Public and Economic Affairs
LAC provides information to the U.S.
Congress on matters of importance to Lithuanian Americans and supports
projects that strengthen Lithuania’s democracy and its security (like
the 2004 inclusion of Lithuania in NATO). Our Economic Affairs Council
seeks to assist Lithuanian-heritage entrepreneurs in the U.S., to
foster business partnerships with Lithuania; and helps find student
internships in Lithuania.
Sports and Youth Activities
Sports, especially basketball, are a
great means of bonding with recent arrivals from Lithuania. LAC also
sponsors Lithuanian Youth Association activities.
