Saturday, May 18, Washington – President Dalia Grybauskaitė participated in the end of school year event at the Kristijonas Donelaitis Lithuanian School and presented students with school graduation certificates.

The President wished the children to cherish the Lithuanian culture, not to forget their mother tongue, and never stop learning and improving their native language skills.

“The uniqueness and strength of the Lithuanian people lie in our traditions and our language. We are a proud nation, not broken by any disasters or blows of history. So I wish you to remain Lithuanians and have Lithuania in your hearts, wherever you live”, the President said.

This Saturday school has over 100 students in the first to eighth forms. Five children have finished the school this year.

Next year, Lithuania will mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Kristijonas Donelaitis, therefore the President has invited the school community to remember and commemorate this writer actively and meaningfully, spread the message of Lithuanian identity and be Kristijonas Donelaitis’ ambassador in the United States.

The Kristijonas Donelaitis Lithuanian School was founded in 1960. Students range from 2 to 14 years of age, some of them travelling almost three hours from their home to school. They are mainly children from Washington and Baltimore.
