The submission by Lithuania to the Secretary-General of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Frantz Douglas of an Initial Memorandum, setting out Lithuania’s position on each OECD legal instrument in force, took place on 21 January in Paris. This is the starting point of technical discussions.
Later, relevant parts of the Initial Memorandum will be submitted to 21 substantive committees reviewing Lithuania. The substantive committees will evaluate the positions taken by Lithuania on legal instruments within their competence, which will take 2-3 years.
“Lithuania has already gained certain transformation experience, because we implemented some essential reforms during our accession process to the World Trade Organization and the European Union. Thus, we are ready to make the most of our accession to the OECD and continue the reforms. We view the accession process and the OECD membership as our country’s continued modernisation,” said Karoblis.
The drafting and submission of the Initial Memorandum to the OECD Secretariat is an official part of the accession process of the candidate country to the OECD.
Today, Karoblis will discuss Lithuania’s accession process, timeframe and other important details also with Marie Kiviniemi, Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD, the Director for Legal Affairs, and heads of several OECD committees.
