Shrove Tuesday Traditions

The last day before the start of Lent is called Shrove Tuesday (Uzgavenes). The main dish for Shrove Tuesday is pancakes or sklindziai, usually made with yeast, apples, berries or plain.

Some regions made donuts or ponckos; while, in Samogitia (Zemaitija) it was customary to feast on pease-pudding or siupinys. The siupinys is made from rye flour, barley, peas, and bacon with various spices. A pig’s tail is cooked in it and then stuck in the middle of the bowl. Sometimes the tail is concealed. The person who gets it in his or her dish will be most lucky all that year.
