Lithuanian-language version of page - lietuviškai

June 30-July 5, 2005

About the Symposium

Every two or three years, individuals of Lithuanian heritage from many countries gather at a symposium to share their scientific research, academic insights, and creative accomplishments.

The XIII World Lithuanian Symposium of Arts and Sciences (Symposium), under the sponsorship of Lithuania’s president, will take place in Lithuania, on June 30 through July 5, 2005. The first part will be held in Vilnius, and the second part in Kaunas, Klaipėda, and Šiauliai. The Symposia are aimed to provide an opportunity for individuals to present their professional and creative accomplishments in arts and sciences as well as a wide range of cultural subjects.

The organizers are herewith inviting scholarly papers on achievements in the areas of arts and sciences, societal and cultural developments. Proposals are invited for discussions and seminars that would address topics not only of interest to general audiences, but also of vital importance on how arts and sciences may and can contribute to Lithuania’s vitality and cultural growth. There will be opportunities to mingle and meet Lithuanian scholars and individuals working in the areas of sciences and creative arts from many parts of the world. The languages of the Symposium will be Lithuanian and English. Papers and presentations from non-Lithuanian authors are also invited as long as the subject matter deals with topics related to Lithuania.

The Lithuanian Symposium was initiated in the U.S. in 1969 by Lithuanian-Americans, many of who had fled the Soviet occupation of Lithuania during the second world war. The 6th Symposium was held in 1989, in Chicago, IL. Besides numerous Lithuanian scholars from the free world, it also attracted 114 individuals from scientific and creative arts fields in Lithuania, then still under the rule of the Soviet Union. The topics discussed provided the intellectual stimulus and moral support to the people of Lithuania in their quest to re-establish their national independence. Since 1991, the Symposium had alternated between the United States and Lithuania and served to strengthen ties among Lithuanian scientists and academics working in different countries.

Proposals for active participation at the Symposium are welcome from individuals from all areas of endeavor. Those who wish to participate with presentations are invited to visit the symposium website (http://www,lms.lt) and to register. You may also contact the Symposium chairman Prof. Dr. Zenonas Rudzikas (rudzikas@itpa.lt) or his Symposium deputy, Dr. Vygintas Gontis at (gontis@ktl.mii.lt) Contact by fax in Lithuania: +370 5 261 47 29 or by telephone: +370 6 981 23 84.
